Royal couple’s first golden carriage ride in Copenhagen

King Frederik and Queen Mary braved strong winds on their first carriage ride through Copenhagen using the royal house’s finest carriage, the gold carriage. The procession, escorted by the Mounted Squadron of the Guard Hussar Regiment, journeyed from Amalienborg’s Christian IX’s Palace through King’s New Square to Christiansborg Palace. The golden carriage, built in 1840 and coated with 24-carat gold leaf, is reserved for annual traditions including year-end court receptions. Today’s reception at Christiansborg hosted military officers, emergency management officials, representatives of major national organizations, and royal proteges. This event is part of several New Year’s courts, a tradition dating back to King Frederik III, showing continuity of royal customs.
