Bolivian army chief arrested after suspected coup

Bolivian police have arrested the former army chief, Juan José Zuniga, following an alleged coup attempt where his forces tried to storm the presidential palace in La Paz. Footage from a national state television channel showed Zuniga being arrested and forced into a police car after addressing journalists. Vice Interior Minister Jhonny Aguilera was heard saying, ‘General, you are arrested.’ The arrest happened shortly after Zuniga’s forces withdrew from the area around the presidential palace, where soldiers had been gathering for hours and a tank attempted to break through the palace door. President Luis Arce suggested that this act was an attempt at staging a coup.
