Danish MEP elected as EU Parliament Vice-President

Christel Schaldemose of the Social Democrats was elected Vice-President of the European Parliament on Tuesday, making Denmark represented in this position for the first time in 25 years. She considers the election as a recognition from her colleagues and aims to make the parliament more transparent and efficient while continuing her advocacy for safer internet for children and youth, she saus. Schaldemose, who has 18 years of experience in the European Parliament, doesn’t expect her new role to detract from her legislative work in committees. With 378 out of 656 votes, she secured an absolute majority in the first round of voting, just hours after Roberta Metsola was re-elected as President. Schaldemose’s position contributes to the top leadership in the parliament, which involves leading sessions with its 720 members located in Strasbourg and Brussels.
