Danish Party Calls for Sharia Ban
The Danish People’s Party is pushing for a ban on adherence to Sharia law over Danish laws. Their focus is on situations where Muslims get married or seek guidance from religious councils rather than the police or legal system. The party wants imams who perform Sharia marriages banned from serving as imams in Denmark. Party leader Morten Messerschmidt clarified that the issue isn’t with being Muslim but with maintaining a clear separation between religion and state laws, a principle he deems vital in Western societies. Messerschmidt also seeks to make mediations in Sharia councils illegal and not recognize Sharia marriages. Jesper Petersen, a lecturer at Copenhagen University, expressed skepticism, suggesting that such a law would affect other religions due to Denmark’s religious freedom and could mean banning Jewish marriages as well.
