Consumers complain about unfair carry-on fees

A coalition of European consumer organizations, represented by BEUC, has filed a complaint against seven airlines for charging unjustified fees for carry-on luggage. The complaint has been submitted to the EU Commission and CPC. Sixteen BEUC members across 12 countries are behind the complaint, but Denmark is not included. According to BEUC, consumers expect to take “a small item and a piece of carry-on luggage” with a basic ticket. The airlines in question include Easyjet, Norwegian, Ryanair, Transavia, Volotea, Vueling, and Wizz Air. In 2014, the EU Court of Justice ruled that charging fees for reasonably-sized carry-on baggage was illegal. The complaint calls for an EU-wide investigation and clearer definitions of “reasonable size and weight” to prevent surprises at airports and reduce disputes.
