We must not abuse the story of the rescue of Danish Jews: These days we remember the almost miraculous rescue of the vast majority of Danish Jews 80 years ago. 472 were deported within days, but about 7,000 Danish Jews were smuggled to Sweden. The rescue of the Danish Jews during World War II is a historical light in the dark, but one cannot borrow from the heroic fervor of the rescue operation to justify Denmark’s policy of cooperation with the German occupying power.
