US Supreme Court allows Trump in Colorado primary

The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that former President Donald Trump may participate in the upcoming primary election in Colorado, overturning a previous Colorado court decision to exclude him due to his alleged role in the 2021 Capitol attack. The Colorado court had cited the 14th Amendment’s Section 3, which bars individuals involved in insurrections from holding office. However, the Supreme Court held that states do not have the power to enforce this provision concerning federal offices, including the presidency. The ruling comes just before Super Tuesday, with primaries in 15 states including Colorado. Trump remains a leading figure in the Republican party, facing Nikki Haley for the nomination. The Supreme Court’s decision has also influenced the inclusion of Trump on Maine’s primary ballots, while Illinois’ response remains unconfirmed.
