Rema 1000 set to open 400th store

Rema 1000 is on the brink of opening its 400th store in Vejle as it buys out locations from Aldi, which is exiting the Danish market. By year’s end, the chain projects to have 430 stores in Denmark, a five-year growth in just one year. Managing Director Henrik Burkal explains that establishing this many stores and creating 2000 jobs is a significant task, involving recruiting and training store managers and staff. Despite this, plans for expansion beyond 2024 are underway. The store operates on a franchise model, with each location run by an independent merchant. Rema 1000’s ownership is linked to Norway’s Reitan Gruppen, with a presence in Denmark since 1994.
