Denmark opens three new African embassies

Denmark is opening new embassies in Senegal, Tunisia, and upgrading a project office to an embassy in Rwanda as part of a new Africa strategy, coined ‘Africa’s Century’, aiming to strengthen Danish presence in Africa. Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and Minister for Development Cooperation and Global Climate Policy Dan Jørgensen announced the upgrade of existing embassies in South Africa, Kenya, Egypt, and Nigeria into regional hubs to cover their respective regions. This expansion entails an increase of 10 Danish diplomats in Africa by 2026. However, the strategy also includes the closure of embassies in Mali and Burkina Faso due to limited operating space after recent coups. The strategy encourages less moralism and more equality in relationships, facilitating investment opportunities for Danish companies. Additionally, a regional innovation center will be established in Kenya, marking Denmark’s first innovation center on the continent.
