Boeing to Lay Off 17,000 Amidst Crisis
Boeing’s CEO, Kelly Ortberg, announced plans to reduce the aerospace giant’s workforce by 10%, impacting about 17,000 employees. The downsizing measure is in response to align the workforce with Boeing’s current financial challenges, which have been aggravated by a major strike involving approximately 33,000 workers. Negotiations with the union IAM have reached a stalemate, with the workers’ demands for pay increases deemed too high by the company. The production setback has pushed the delivery of the new Boeing 777X plane to 2026, a year later than planned. Additionally, safety concerns with Boeing’s 737 Max 9 and a failed test of the Starliner spacecraft have further compounded the company’s troubles.
