Govt to advance women’s conscription in 2026

Denmark has decided to move up the implementation of female conscription to 2026, matching the male draft conditions. This decision comes after the Liberal Alliance (LA) withdrew its veto following a period of conflicting statements. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen expressed relief as it reduces bureaucracy. LAs political spokesperson Sólbjørg Jakobsen confirmed no further opening of the agreement is expected, and although no demands were set by LA, Poulsen jokingly offered ‘two cups of coffee and a piece of Danish pastry’ in gratitude. The introduction of female conscription was initially opposed by the Danmarksdemokraterne and LA. It will increase conscription duration to 11 months and the number of conscripts to 7,500, up from 5,000.
