Record high employment for non-Western immigrants
The number of non-Western immigrants employed in Denmark rose every quarter since 2021, reaching an all-time high of 217,328 in Q4 of 2023, according to Statistics Denmark. This marks a 7.8% increase from the same quarter the previous year. Over ten years, the number has more than doubled. The robust Danish job market has been driving demand for labor, enabling many non-Western immigrants, including many Ukrainians, to enter the job market, with 19,900 Ukrainian immigrants employed by end of 2023. Even excluding Ukrainians, employment among non-Western immigrants has surged by 91% over the past decade. The overall employment also reached a peak of three million in the fall. With a possible slight decline in general employment predicted for the year, non-Western immigrants’ job numbers may be at risk, though a significant drop isn’t expected. Non-Western immigrants commonly work in healthcare, cleaning, industry, and hospitality sector, says Kristian Skriver, Senior Economist at Danish Chamber of Commerce.
