Denmark to learn from China’s African success

Denmark’s Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has advocated for adopting elements of China’s successful methods in Africa. As Denmark launches a new strategy for cooperation with Africa, Rasmussen points to China’s influence, gained without imposing conditions, as a cause for concern in Europe. He cites Sierra Leone’s diplomatic visit to China, where they received development funds and infrastructure investment, as a lesson for Denmark. China has expanded infrastructure with motorways and ports, increasing its influence and access to raw materials. The Danish model of tying economic aid to democratic and humanitarian improvements has proved less effective. Rasmussen emphasizes a pragmatic approach over idealism, seeking more practical improvements that matter to African leaders. Kenya’s Foreign Minister Musalia Mudavadi welcomes Denmark’s broader focus and desire for deeper trade and investment engagement, noting that foreign engagement should not always be seen as exploitive, but as contributions to African growth.
