Professor critiques new highway project

A new Limfjords-crossing in North Jutland is expected to be passed by the Danish parliament, despite significant criticism from experts and environmental groups. Mogens Fosgerau, a transport economics professor at the University of Copenhagen, asserts the project will impoverish society, mainly due to its marginal economic benefits and environmental costs, such as pollution and noise. The highway construction is estimated to emit 480,000 tons of CO2, significantly higher than the initially projected 263,000 tons, resulting in an 83% increase. This led the Danish Social Liberal Party to withdraw support. Despite criticisms, Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen defends the decision, highlighting the creation of new natural habitats, including a 20-hectare shallow water area envisaged as an ‘El Dorado’ for otters.
