Danes reject unfair treatment of Greenland

Despite Denmark’s Prime Minister acknowledging ‘dark chapters’ in the relationship with Greenland, a new poll by Voxmeter for Ritzau indicates a majority of Danes do not believe Denmark has treated Greenland unfairly. The survey, conducted from February 12 to 16 with 1022 respondents, found that 54.8% think Denmark has generally been fair to Greenland. In contrast, 25.8% perceive the treatment as mostly unfair, and 19.4% are unsure. Ulrik Pram Gad, a senior researcher at the Danish Institute for International Studies, notes a deep divide between the perceptions of Danes and Greenlanders, posing a challenge to the unity of the two. Greenlandic lawmaker Aaja Chemnitz calls for increased awareness of Denmark’s colonial past and its injustices. Formal apologies and compensation, such as for the so-called experiment children, have been made by Denmark, and further acknowledgments of past wrongdoings may follow as historical investigations continue.
