1200 Danish Troops in Largest NATO Drill in Decades

Up to 1200 Danish soldiers from all branches of the military will take part in NATO’s exercise Steadfast Defender 2024, running from February to May. This is the most significant NATO exercise in decades, aiming to train the alliance’s ability to implement its defense plans, involving the transfer of personnel and material from North America to Europe to strengthen the alliance. Around 90,000 soldiers from all 31 member countries and candidate Sweden will participate. Denmark will provide host nation support, given its strategic location alongside the Baltic, essential for swiftly reinforcing the alliance in Eastern Europe. The exercise extends across the Atlantic to the Baltic states, continental Europe, and down to the Black Sea region. The German news agency dpa has reported that the exercise’s purpose is to deter Russia, with a scenario featuring a Russian attack triggering NATO’s Article 5, which interprets an attack on one ally as an attack on all.
