Wammen foresees no blockade to Greenland’s independence
Danish Finance Minister Nicolai Wammen, representing the Social Democrats at the annual New Year’s assembly in Nyborg, stated that a majority in the Danish Parliament would not prevent a Greenlandic decision on independence. The Greenlandic people’s right to determine their independence is enshrined in the self-government law, which requires any agreement on Greenlandic independence between the Greenland and Danish governments to be ratified by a referendum in Greenland and consent from both parliaments. Despite not wanting Greenland to leave the kingdom, Wammen, Martin Lidegaard of the Social Liberal Party, and Alex Vanopslagh of the Liberal Alliance stress the need to respect the self-government law. The consensus among these leaders is that Greenland’s future is to be decided by its own people, not by Copenhagen.
