Study of CO2 storage in Danish cities expands
The Danish Energy Agency has authorized further investigation into possible underground CO2 storage at three locations: Gassum, Rødby, and Havnsø. While Stenlille and Thorning were initially considered, they are not proceeding to the investigation stage. Energistyrelsen’s director, Kristoffer Böttzauw, emphasized the careful review of projects for realistic and safe execution. The companies Wintershall Dea, Ineos E&P, CarbonCuts, and Ørsted Carbon Solutions received the green light for continued research. If deemed suitable and safe, they may later seek permission to start CO2 storage. Despite previous confirmations by Geus of the Danish subsoil’s suitability, local citizens have expressed concerns, even starting a petition against the potential Havnsø storage site. An orientation meeting will be held on June 27 for residents in the approved areas.
