Trump announces tariffs on Mexico and Canada
U.S. President Donald Trump announces a 25% tariff on goods from Mexico and Canada effective March 4, motivated by the high levels of illegal drugs entering the U.S. from these countries. This tariff is aimed at addressing the significant toll of drug-related deaths in the U.S., with over 100,000 fatalities last year alone. Trump delayed the implementation, which was initially scheduled for February, now also including a 10% tariff on Chinese goods. Mexico’s President hopes for negotiations to prevent the tariffs. Trump has also indicated a forthcoming 25% tariff on European cars and other goods, condemning the EU for exploiting U.S. trade and suggesting tariffs can balance trade and promote American products.
