Denmark raises alert for mosquito virus

The State Serum Institute (SSI) in Denmark is intensifying its surveillance due to the detection of West Nile fever in Northern Germany, indicating the virus may spread to Denmark. SSI has deployed mobile traps throughout July to September in southern Denmark, however, the virus has not yet been found. The illness, common in Africa and the Middle East, has been expanding in Europe with the climate becoming warmer and wetter. Most people infected with the virus do not show symptoms, but a small percentage can develop severe neurological complications. Currently, there is no human vaccine, but one exists for horses in Southern Europe. The likelihood of the virus reaching Denmark depends on future climate conditions. SSI advises no immediate concern, but recommends vigilance and potential future preventive measures like wearing long sleeves and using mosquito spray.
