Campaign warns new drivers of lower alcohol limit
Starting July 1, the blood alcohol limit for new drivers is reduced to 0.2 from 0.5. This applies during the first three years after obtaining a driver’s license. Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen explains that this effectively means new drivers cannot consume alcohol before driving. A violation results in a fine, a driving ban, and the need to retake driving tests. Concurrently, 17-year-olds can drive without an escort from 5 AM to 8 PM, but must have one outside these hours. Safety Traffic Council highlights the introduction of a campaign targeting new drivers on social media. Director Jakob Bøving Arendt states these measures could reduce accidents among young drivers and cultivate better driving habits. Survey data shows that self-reported underage drunk driving increased from 9% in 2019 to 17% in 2024.
