Psychologists unable to treat psychiatric cases

A survey by the Danish Psychological Association reveals psychologists often have to reject psychiatric patients’ requests for therapy due to a lack of resources; 53% of psychologists in psychiatry report frequently declining patients even when it would be beneficial. Association chair Dea Seidenfaden finds the results ‘very alarming,’ underlining the significance of psychological treatment for health and quality of life. The survey highlights that 66% of psychologists faced resource shortages preventing offering various treatments and psychoeducation in the past month. Consequently, the Association suggests guaranteeing patients the right to psychological treatment when professionally indicated, urging this inclusion in the ten-year plan established in September 2022 through increased hiring, especially in remote areas. The survey was anonymously completed by 484 psychologists.
