Zelensky Reports 31,000 Ukrainian Soldiers Killed
Ukraine’s President, Volodymyr Zelensky revealed that 31,000 Ukrainian soldiers have died in the conflict with Russia during a press event in Kyiv. It’s the first time Zelensky has assigned a number to the military fatalities in the two-year war. The figure contradicts higher casualty estimates made by Russia and is not yet independently verified. A November 2023 report from a Ukrainian group estimated over 30,000 soldier deaths while American officials previously suggested nearly 70,000. Zelensky emphasized the West’s support as crucial to the war’s outcome and ultimate casualty count. Ukraine awaits the U.S. Congress’s approval of a significant aid package and Zelensky expressed confidence in a positive decision. UN data reports at least 10,000 civilian lives lost and 20,000 wounded in Ukraine.
