Activist Paul Watson’s detention prolonged

Canadian-American whale activist Paul Watson’s detention in Greenland is extended to December 18, following a court ruling. Arrested in Nuuk since July, his ongoing detention faces criticism from his lawyer, Julie Stage, who also questions the legal basis, suggesting the case is too old. Japan seeks Watson’s extradition for an incident from 2010 involving damage to a whaling ship and interference with whalers, leading to one injury. Watson denies any wrongdoing. The prosecution’s request for a longer detention until December 30 was not fully granted, with the court shortening it to 16 days. An imminent decision on extradition will be made by the Ministry of Justice. Watson’s appeals against his detention continue as international protests call for his release, and various governments have reached out to the Greenlandic authorities.
