Greenland’s election winner: All parties still in play

Jens-Frederik Nielsen, the leader of the Democrats (Demokraatit), has confirmed on Tuesday to Sermitsiaq, a Greenlandic media outlet, that the second round of negotiation talks for forming a government is underway, one week after the elections to the Greenlandic parliament. He assures that all parties are still involved without any unfulfillable demands, hence all options remain open. Five parties won seats in Inatsisartut, where Demokraatit tripled its presence to ten mandates, followed by Naleraq with eight, and the government parties IA and Siumut with seven and four respectively, with Atassut gaining two. Sixteen seats are required for a majority. Demokraatit ran on a platform advocating a balanced independence process in cooperation with the Danish government. Amidst external pressures, notably from the U.S. and Russia’s military buildup, Nielsen stresses the importance of unity in Greenlandic politics and resilience against such pressures, maintaining the country’s credibility and integrity.
