US demands changes in UNRWA to resume support
The United States requires “fundamental changes” before it will resume funding to the UN Relief and Works Agency for palestinian refugees (UNRWA), as stated by U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Linda Thomas-Greenfield. The demand follows Israel’s accusations of 12 UNRWA employees participating in Hamas attacks on October 7, prompting a UN investigation into the agency. Thomas-Greenfield emphasized the need to hold those involved in criminal activities accountable. The UN Security Council expressed concern over the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Gaza, where UNRWA provides crucial services such as schools, hospitals, and other essentials, with Sigrid Kaag highlighting that no other organization can replace UNRWA’s capacity and knowledge. Following Israel’s allegations, which also implicated 190 UNRWA staff members as militants affiliated with Hamas or Islamic Jihad, 13 countries have suspended payments to UNRWA. Sweden announced the redirection of funds meant for UNRWA to other humanitarian bodies in Palestinian territories and Lebanon.
