Danish Oscar hope loses to Brazilian drama

The Brazilian drama ‘I’m Still Here’ won the Oscar for Best International Film, leaving the Danish ‘The Girl with the Needle,’ directed by Swedish filmmaker Magnus von Horn, without the award. The film, set in Rio de Janeiro, is directed by Walter Salles and marks the first time a film from Brazil has won in this category. It portrays the story of Eunice Paiva, who fights to uncover the fate of her husband after he was kidnapped by government officials in 1971. In his acceptance speech, Salles dedicated the award to Paiva, praising her resilience. ‘I’m Still Here’ had also been nominated for Best Picture, and its lead, Fernanda Torres, for Best Actress, though ‘Anora’ took home the Best Picture award with Mikey Madison winning Best Actress.
