At least 111 people have died after an earthquake struck the province of Gansu in northwestern China late Monday, Chinese state media reported. The local government said 397 people had been injured. The quake occurred at 11:59 p.m. local time Monday at a depth of ten kilometers, according to China’s Earthquake Network Center (CENC). The quake has a calculated magnitude of 6.2. Rescue workers are on their way to the scene, while a working group to assess how badly the area is affected has been dispatched, Chinese state media said. The number of people missing from the quake is not known. The area is located on the northern edge of the Tibetan Plateau, which is a mountainous area. /ritzau/AFP
