The president of the Comoros archipelago in the Indian Ocean, former coup leader Azali Assoumani, has been re-elected in the first round of elections which, according to the opposition, were marked by fraud and irregularities, Reuters reports. There was a low turnout in the elections held on Sunday. The official results, released on Tuesday, show that Assoumani received 62.97 percent of the vote in the first round. He has thus been re-elected and a second round of voting is superfluous. Several opposition politicians had called for a boycott of the election, with five different candidates challenging the 65-year-old Assoumani. /ritzau/
