Aarhus Harbor expansion paused by council

The planned 43-hectare expansion of Aarhus Harbor has been politically halted, with the project on pause for several years. The decision is postponed until after next year’s municipal election for a new council to decide on its resume. The halt is due to a final ruling by the planning complaints board citing unmet minimum requirements for an environmental report with significant legal deficiencies. However, the parties in Aarhus City Council had still planned for the harbor’s expansion and called for a review of the local plan. Instead of the harbor expansion, focus will shift to the Aarhus ReWater project, an advanced wastewater treatment plant to protect local aquatic environments. Mayor Jacob Bundsgaard expressed regret over the impact on the harbor’s competitiveness.
