Egyptian president receives Denmark’s highest order

Egyptian president Abdel Fattah al-Sisi is set to receive the Order of the Elephant from Denmark’s royal house during his state visit. Traditionally, state visits involve exchanging honors if both nations have an order system. King Frederik received Egypt’s Order of the Nile, and Queen Mary the Al-Kamal Order. In the past, ex-President Mubarak of Egypt and Romania’s Ceausescu also received the Elephant Order, with Ceausescu’s being revoked in 1989. The Order of the Elephant, Denmark’s foremost chivalric order, is now almost solely given to foreign royalty and heads of state. There will be a gala banquet for president al-Sisi at Christiansborg Palace, and meetings with prime minister Mette Frederiksen and other Danish dignitaries are scheduled.
