Defense allocates 880M to boost Navy’s air defense

The Danish Ministry of Defense announced an allocation of 880 million kroner to procure more Evolved Sea Sparrow Missiles (ESSM) Block 2 and support equipment. The aim is to enhance the Danish Navy’s frigates’ air defense capabilities against various threats. Defense Minister Troels Lund Poulsen emphasized the need for frigates to withstand threats on land, sea, and air, justifying the expedited procurement to bolster combat strength. Funding for the purchase comes from an acceleration fund totaling 50 billion kroner, aimed at immediately strengthening Denmark’s defense capabilities. Additional funds from this acceleration fund will advance the procurement of already planned ESSM missiles. Defense Chief Michael Hyldgaard highlighted that obtaining more missiles fulfills their needs and provides a modern and well-known system, crucial for operational effectiveness.
