Volunteers at controversial center awarded prize
Approximately 50 volunteers at Udrejsecenter Kærshovedgård were awarded the Finn Nørgaard Prize 2024 for their efforts in creating community and moments of compassion for people in difficult situations, including rejected asylum seekers, deportees, and those living under tolerated stay. The award was presented at Christiansborg on the anniversary of the 2015 Copenhagen shootings where director Finn Nørgaard and Jewish guard Dan Uzan were killed. The prize, accompanied by a grant of 50,000 kroner, is given annually to those who engage vulnerable groups in healthy communities. Recently, residents of the center have been investigated for illegal activities such as drug possession and trafficking, and a shooting incident. The Finn Nørgaard Association, founded by Nørgaard’s family and friends after he was killed by Omar el-Hussein, honors his memory by recognizing those who foster care and contribute positively to society.
