COVID-19 infections continue to decline
COVID-19 infections are still receding, and the number of cases is continuously dropping, according to Statens Serum Institute (SSI). Chief surgeon Bolette Søborg from SSI anticipates this trend to persist, with a decrease visible in wastewater, test samples, and hospital admissions. The summer season plays a significant role in reducing airborne infections in the population, she explains. However, there is a risk of a new wave in the winter if a new contagious variant emerges. Wastewater surveillance, currently at a ‘medium level’ of COVID-19, remains a crucial method for SSI to monitor the virus spread in the population, providing a clearer picture than confirmed cases alone can show. The concentration of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater was lower in week 31 than the previous week, offering the truest reflection of the virus levels in society.
