Expert Sees Pro-Russian Cyber Attack as Fear Tactic

A pro-Russian hacker group, NoName057, has targeted Denmark’s critical infrastructure with DDoS attacks to create unease, according to IT security expert Peter Kruse of CSIS. Websites, including those of Copenhagen Airport, Traffic Authority, and Movia, were overwhelmed with data and shut down on Sunday afternoon and evening. According to TV 2 NoName057 announced their intention to hit three transport websites and a municipality, choosing targets likely randomly, causing disruptions in critical services. While more attacks are expected, Kruse believes that better protection against such DDoS attacks can prevent future losses and suggests investing in security measures to counter loss of trust and increase security. He views these assaults as part of Russia’s hybrid warfare tactics, aiming to damage private Western companies in line with Russia’s interests.
