Minister promises more actions for oceans

Denmark’s Environment Minister, Magnus Heunicke, concedes that the existing farm deal tools don’t suffice to improve the marine ecosystem, heralding further discussions for new measures. Parties will revisit the 2021 agreement post-scientific analysis of the interventions required. Political spokespersons advocate immediate nitrogen reductions, criticizing delays for additional data. They call for solid mandates on farming practices, noting voluntary agreements have failed, pointing out the gap between the current agricultural goal and the stricter EU water quality directive. The discrepancy, highlighted by recent disclosures of prioritizing commercial over environmental concerns and severe oxygen depletion events, has spurred a 405 million kroner relief package targeting nitrogen reduction in key fjords.
