Løkke and Rubio to discuss arctic security

Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio agreed in a 20-minute phone conversation to discuss Arctic security at a later date. Although Arctic security was not on the agenda for this call, both sides plan to meet in person and continue discussions through official channels. Rasmussen mentioned it was the U.S.’s preference not to discuss Arctic issues this time, to enable better preparation for future dialogue. Rubio’s appointment comes in the wake of Trump’s remarks on the strategic importance of Greenland for U.S. security and his previous intent to purchase Greenland in 2019, which was met with statements from Greenland’s leader that the territory is not for sale.
