Police urge public camera registration
The Danish National Police is encouraging owners of surveillance cameras to register their devices with the police’s database to aid in investigations. Companies, organizations, and associations have been required since 2021 to register any cameras that record in public spaces, yet the actual number of registrations falls short of expectations. The registration, which is voluntary for private citizens, is done in the Police Camera Register (POLCAM). Currently, there are about 39,000 registrations reported by Chief Police Inspector Johannes Sølvsten Jönsson. The police do not get access to live feed but use the register to locate cameras and contact owners for footage, which has been beneficial in severe cases like murder, rape, and missing persons inquiries. The police inspector emphasizes the importance of all registrations, as a single piece of unknown footage could be critical to an investigation.
