Record legal gender changes in Denmark

Denmark has seen a record number of legal gender changes since it was made possible a decade ago, with 471 applications in 2024, according to Berlingske citing the CPR registry. This is an increase from the previous year. Adults have been able to legally change their gender since 2014 by applying to the Digitalization Ministry with a written declaration and confirming it six months later. Some applicants withdraw during this reflection period, therefore actual legal gender changes (390 in 2024) are fewer than applications. The process doesn’t require physical modifications. Recipients get a new health card and personal ID number, which reflects their new gender, and can update documents like passports. Since 2014, 3,342 people have used the scheme, and 47 have reversed their decision, often due to regret.
