Declining German studies enrollment could impact Danish businesses
Enrollment in language studies, including German and French, has dropped by 10% from last year with only 1643 students admitted, compared to 1835. According to Mette Fjord of the Danish Association of Masters and PhDs, there are now around 1000 fewer admissions compared to the figure in 2020 which stood at 2630. Jesper Beinov from SMVdanmark, representing small and medium-sized enterprises, believes this decline is alarming, as export is crucial for Denmark, and thus strong skills in business languages, especially German, are essential. As most Danish companies are SMEs with Germany as their main trading partner, English is not sufficient as understanding language and culture is imperative for market access and relationship building.
