Parties urge environmental law reform post Nordic Waste

Following the Nordic Waste case, several political parties agree with the Local Government Denmark’s (KL) call for changes to the environmental damage law. Søren Egge Rasmussen from the Red-Green Alliance welcomes a revision to improve control measures. KL spokesperson, Birgit Hansen, identified a significant loophole that places financial risk solely on municipalities. After Nordic Waste went bankrupt, Randers Municipality inherited the cleanup responsibility from the state. Danish People’s Party, Socialist People’s Party, and The Alternative party also support legislative changes. The Socialist People’s Party’s proposal in Parliament emphasized thorough implementation of the environmental liability directive, focusing on obligation to act and financial liability. Environmental minister Magnus Heunicke ensures a comprehensive review with the parties before the summer of 2024.
