Danish drama shortlisted for Europe’s Oscars

The Danish thriller ‘Pigen med nålen’ has been shortlisted for the European Film Awards 2024. Set in post-WWI Copenhagen, it follows Karoline, a factory worker facing unemployment, abandonment, and pregnancy. She meets Dagmar, who runs a secret adoption agency. The film, directed by Magnus von Horn, is based on the true story of Denmark’s worst serial killer, Dagmar Overbye, guilty of murdering nine infants. Lauded for intense visuals and psychological depth, the film premiered at Cannes and is set to appear at the Toronto Film Festival. Vic Carmen Sonne stars as Karoline, with Trine Dyrholm as Dagmar. The Danish premiere is scheduled for January 2025.
