Pro-European president wins in Moldova

Maia Sandu has emerged victorious in the Moldovan presidential election, securing her position for another four-year term against Alexandr Stoianoglo. With 98 percent of the vote counted, Sandu, who is viewed as more EU and Western-friendly, has won 54 percent while Stoianoglo, seen as more Russia-friendly, received 46 percent. Exclaiming that Moldova ‘has won,’ Sandu delivered a speech emphasizing the people’s choice for a ‘dignified future.’ The election proceeded to a runoff as no candidate secured over half the initial votes, where Sandu received 42 percent and Stoianoglo 26 percent. This follows Moldova’s granted EU candidate status in 2022 after applying for EU membership amid the Ukraine conflict. EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Sandu, expressing readiness to work towards Moldova’s European future. The recent win reflects Moldova’s positive response to EU membership in a closely contested referendum.
