Consumers struggle to shake off gloom
In Denmark, consumer confidence remains pessimistic despite positive economic indicators, with the consumer confidence index at -8.6 in april, slightly down from march. Danish consumers have been persistently negative since fall 2021, despite reduced inflation and record employment, which should lighten the mood according to Morten Granzau of Confederation of Danish Industry. Households are well-cushioned with savings to withstand economic downturns. Additionally, wages are rising at the fastest pace in over 30 years, which Brian Friis Helmer from Arbejdernes Landsbank believes should lead to an increase in consumer confidence throughout the year. The consumer confidence indicator is based on a survey among 1,000 Danes regarding their view of personal and national economy and willingness to make purchases.
