Denmark still supports Vestager for EIB

The question as to who is to become the chair of the European Investment Bank (EIB) remains open, with Denmark continuing to support Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s hitherto Executive Vice-President of the European Commission and Competition Commissioner. “The government continues to support Margrethe Vestager for the position of EIB President. As the government has also said before, we want clarification as soon as possible. Margrethe Vestager herself has also called for this,” says Minister for Industry, Business and Financial Affairs Morten Bødskov.
The process has now stretched lasted for almost three months. During this period, Margrethe Vestager has been on leave from her post as Executive Vice-President of the European Commission. “Because it is untenable that Denmark is without a commissioner for almost three months. We have clearly announced that we support Margrethe Vestager. How the process is organised is the responsibility of the Belgians, but it is in any case clear that Denmark needs clarification,” says Bødskov. Belgium’s finance minister, Vincent Van Peteghem, has been appointed to lead negotiations between EU countries on who should hold the post. Vestager’s strongest rival is Spain’s finance minister, Nadia Calviño. Among other things, she has received support from German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. Several other EU countries are also seen as leaning towards Calviño as the new head of the investment bank. /ritzau/
