Greenlanders reject Trump’s advances
A poll by Verian for Berlingske and the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitsiaq shows that 85% of Greenlanders reject the idea of leaving the Danish realm to become part of the USA, with only 6% in favor and 9% undecided. The question posed was whether they wanted Greenland to exit the realm to join the USA. This survey comes amidst increased interest from US president Donald Trump in acquiring Greenland. The poll was conducted between January 22-26 with 497 representative adults in Greenland and has a statistical uncertainty of 3.1 percentage points. Prime minister Mette Frederiksen maintains that Greenland’s future is for Greenlanders to decide, and hints at contentment with the results reflecting a desire for continued close relations with Denmark, albeit possibly in a different form. Following her European tour, Frederiksen emphasizes European unity against Trump’s undeterred approach, which includes willingness to use military force or economic sanctions.
