Police investigate vandalism of WWII memorial

Copenhagen police have launched an investigation following the vandalism of a memorial stone commemorating Danish aid to Jews during World War II. The stone, located on Israels Plads near Nørreport Station, was defaced with red paint following a pro-Palestinian demonstration. The group behind the protest, ‘Everyone on the street for a free Palestine’, is communicating with the police about the incident. Kirkeminister and minister for urban and rural districts, Morten Dahlin (V), condemned the act as ‘historically ignorant to an indescribable degree’ and expressed hope that the responsible individuals would be caught. Dahlin also criticized the demonstration for taking place on Denmark’s Liberation Day and labeled the event shameful, additionally critiquing the demonstrators’ message on Facebook. This is not the first instance of vandalism at the site; last November, the memorial was also defaced.
