DK frigate to Red Sea

The government is proposing to send a military consignment of 175 officers and soldier with a frigate to the Red Sea for a deployment of about two months, according to the motion for a resolution. It will be an Iver Huitfeldt-class frigate that will be deployed for about two months, according to a motion for a resolution that Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has tabled for the Folketing. Among other things, military police, intelligence personnel and interpreters are going to the Red Sea. A helicopter and a “maritime support element” will also be included. The frigate will monitor the area and protect shipping traffic. In the area, there have been several attacks by the Houthi movement on cargo ships. The ship will act as a shield between the cargo ships and the missiles launched against them by the Houthi movement in Yemen. The mission is considered far more dangerous for the Danish crew than previous pirate missions. The price for the effort will be around DKK 50 million. /ritzau/
