The 15 countries on the UN Security Council have unanimously agreed to withdraw the Monusco peacekeeping force from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), according to a message on X. The DR Congolese government has asked the UN to withdraw the force from the central African country. Withdrawal will begin as early as this month, a year earlier than originally planned. The peacekeeping forces in the province of South Kivu are due to be out by the end of April 2024. The DRC government, headed by President Felix Tshisekedi, has asked the UN to withdraw its peacekeepers as it feels that the force is ineffective and that the UN soldiers have failed to bring peace to the eastern parts of the country. /ritzau/AFP/
