DRCongo
Chaotic conditions characterised a number of polling stations in DR Congo on Wednesday. Electoral authorities have therefore extended the polling by one day in areas where voters have not been able to vote. The incumbent president, Felix Tshisekedi, is seeking re-election. He is being challenged by opposition leader Martin Fayulu and 2018 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Denis Mukwege. But it is not only the presidency that is at stake. At both regional and national level, MPs have to be voted on. At the same time, there are local elections. It was precisely the four parallel elections that raised fears in advance that logistical challenges would arise. A fear that on Wednesday became reality. Several hours after people were supposed to start voting, election officials were still in the process of bringing the necessary materials to certain polling stations. Some of the polling stations remained closed throughout the day. /ritzau/AFP/
